The 2019 recognition was presented to:

Individual Honoree:
Robert J. Murphy, who served as president of the Beacon Historical Society for 20 years and who has prepared its popular monthly newsletter for 38 years. Murphy has co-authored two books and prepared dozens of programs about the city’s rich history. He is a 1966 graduate of Beacon High School who earned his BA from Manhattan College and MA from SUNY-Albany.

Organizational Honoree:
Tioronda Garden Club, which has been beautifying Beacon since 1929. Well known for its many beautiful civic projects, including Main Street flower baskets, holiday decorations and floral pieces for Beacon High School graduations, the Garden Club’s most recent effort resulted in a Blue Star Highway designation and marker for Route 9D in honor of Beacon’s veterans of all conflicts.

“Thank you to all our local businesses and residents that supported this event to celebrate Beacon’s past and future,” said Historical Society President Diane Lapis, noting that it is the Society’s single largest fundraiser.  “In addition to  honoring two outstanding award recipients, the proceeds will be used to assist our Society in celebrating the history of Beacon at a time when our city is experiencing a great deal of interest and rebirth.
