The Life of James F. Brown: Former Slave & Master Gardener at Mount Gulian

Inspiration. Bravery. Perseverance. Character. Democracy.

Join us via Zoom on Tuesday, February 16 at 7:00pm as Elaine Hayes, Executive Director of Mount Gulian Historic Site, shares the true story of one of our own locally noteworthy Beacon residents, James F. Brown. Mr. Brown was born a slave in Maryland, escaped to New York, was manumitted by the Verplancks and became the master gardener and trustworthy member of the Verplanck household. A man of great character and charisma, he was literate and religious. His main desire was to become a full citizen and earn the right to vote, when very few African American men had that basic right. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for Q & A with Ms. Hayes. Send an email to register for this free program at beaconhistorical@gmail.com or click on the Zoom Link below.
